WHY DOES YOUR CAMPUS NEED BADD?

Misuse of alcohol by some college students greatly impacts the entire campus and community.  Not only is the individual drinker affected, but so are fellow students, the community, faculty members and the college itself.  A recent study conducted indicates staggering numbers of how alcohol affects U.S. colleges across the country:

  • 1,700 college students between the ages of 18 -24 die each year from alcohol misuse
  • 70,000 college students reported cases of sexual abuse because of alcohol use
  • 600,000 reported cases of students being assaulted by someone who had been drinking
  • 500,000 college students unintentional injuries blamed on alcohol use

WHERE DOES BADD FIT ON YOUR CAMPUS?

This BADD chapter offers comprehensive prevention strategies that not only educate individuals but also foster a safer campus and community environment.  Environmental prevention strategies ask the entire university community to play a role in preventing underage alcohol use and alcohol abuse.  While it is ultimately an individual choice to consume alcohol in illegal and dangerous ways, most times there are numerous factors that condone and encourage these types of behaviors. From the ads in the student newspaper to the policies for underage alcohol use in dormitories, all facets of the university community play a role in encouraging or preventing dangerous behaviors.  We are working to help eliminate these negative influences.

BADD complements existing programs that your campus may already offer.  Many peer education and social norm groups are doing a great job in helping to educate and assist students on campus.  This BADD chapter can fill in the gaps by ensuring laws are being enforced consistently and by providing a student voice in campus alcohol policy development.

Our influence and actions do not stop at the boundaries of ETSU.  College drinking behaviors can impact more than just this campus.  BADD also provides a bridge between campus and community to foster a healthy collaboration to ensure a healthy and safe environment.
